Evelyn M. Holmes

Evelyn Moorman Holmes was born on October 25, 1937, at Freeman's Hospital in Washington, DC, to the late Nellie Bishop and Herschel Moorman. Evelyn departed this life peacefully on September 2, 2012, surrounded by her loved ones.

Evelyn met Lesley Holmes while attending Bowie State University. They fell in love and united in holy matrimony on February 21, 1957. Three children were brought into this union, Renee', Roderick; who preceded her in death and Rawn.

Evelyn received her education in the Harford County Public Schools. After graduating from Central Consolidated High School, she attended Bowie State University, where she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. After graduating, she moved to Washington, DC, and started teaching in the DC Public Schools. Evelyn then attended George Washington University and received a Masters in Urban Learning in 1977. She taught for thirty-one years.

Evelyn grew up attending John Wesley Methodist Church in Harford County, MD. When she relocated to this area, she joined and was baptized at Parker Memorial Baptist Church in Silver Spring, MD. She was a Deaconess, sang in the choir and taught Sunday and Vacation Bible Schools.

Evelyn retired in 1990 and moved to Hustle, VA. There she joined Jerusalem Baptist Church in Doswell, VA. She sang in the choir, taught the Senior Bible Study Class and was a member of Seniors in Action.

Evelyn leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband, Lesley; daughter, Renee Wills (Winfred II) of Upper Marlboro, MD; son, Rawn Holmes (Meta) of Severn, MD; three sisters, Nellie Washington of Baltimore, MD, Jacquelyn Downing of Woodbridge, VA, Tracy Downing of Baltimore, MD; one brother, Clarence Downing (Geraldine) of Greenbelt, MD; nine grandchildren, Winfred III, Lesley, April (Bernard Sr.), Ebony, Rawn, Patrick, Shanelle , Shiesha, Jehlani; two great-grandchildren, Bernard Jr and Kameron; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
