Ethel Mae Brooks Ashton, the oldest daughter of the late Deacon Peyton Ashton Lucas, Sr. and Mary Lucy Brooks Lucas, was born on February 1, 1940 in King George, Virginia. She went home to be with the Lord on March 4, 2016.
Ethel accepted Christ, was baptized and become a member of Good Hope Baptist Church in 1949 under the leadership of Reverend W. Lloyd Watts. She served faithfully as the pianist for the Good Will Gospel Chorus and later for the Mass choir until the mid-80's.
Ethel Mae met her late husband, Thomas Waldolph Ashton in Colonial Beach, VA while he was helping his best friend build a house. They were united in holy matrimony on July 10, 1960 until his passing in October 1999.
She was a woman that was loved by everyone. Her "Diva" personality was recognized by all. She always had a word of encouragement no matter the situation. That was "Mama", "Grandma", and "Gramps"!!! She loved everybody and everybody loved her in return.
In the mid-80s, Ethel joined Mount Calvary Baptist Church and was the director of the men's choir, the Crusaders. She was a member of various ministries including the cultural committee, the music ministry and the drama ministry. She had the "God-Given Gift" to write plays on a whim just based on a person's character. An extensive list of her accomplishments are named in the 17th Edition of World Wide Publishing: Empowering Executives, Professionals, Entrepreneurs around the Globe. Ethel was an accomplished writer, poet, seamstress, bowler and pianist, just to name a few. And you know - Mama loved her BINGO!
Ethel Leaves to celebrate her life: two daughters, Adreda Howard (Rayford) of Silver Spring, MD and Aretha Stephenson (Michael) of Capital Heights, MD; two sons: Adrian Ashton (Bonita) of Hyattsville, MD, Armin Ashton (Waunett) of Lanham, MD; 15 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Sara Monroe of Atlanta, GA and Lena Cross of Largo, MD; one god-sister, Viola Williams; one brother-in law, Fermon Ashton (Phyllis) of King George, VA; two sister-in-laws Helen Ashton of Montross, VA and Patricia Lucas of San Diego, CA; a dear friend, Arnita Fulp and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
