Esther M. Young

Esther Mernice Young, daughter of the late Willie and Lucy Holmes of Newtown, VA, born September 25, 1939 departed this life at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in King George, VA on May 16, 2022 at 5:15pm. She ate her lunch and took an afternoon nap. She was pronounced deceased at 6:05pm after she could not be awakened for dinner. Passing in one’s sleep is a gift from God Himself. She accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church throughout her childhood. As an adult she joined 1st Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Newtown, VA where she remained a member until her death.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Lucy Holmes both of Newtown VA. Her husband, whom she adored, Thomas E. Young of Newtown. Her son Daniel R. Holmes Sr. and grandson Everette M. Bundy both of Newtown. Brothers: Willie J. Holmes, Harry Holmes (Mary), Robert Benny Holmes all of Newtown, and Irvin Holmes of Philadelphia, PA. Sisters: Eloise Johnson of Newport News, VA, Lucy Annetta Harris of Philadelphia, PA, and a set of twin girls who died at birth.

She leaves to cherish loving memories: one son Gerald T. Holmes (Sheila) of Richmond, VA, one daughter Ellen (Penny) Burno (Anthony) of King George, VA, and one daughter-in-law Alesia Holmes of Newtown. She has 9 grandchildren: Demetrise Johnson (Eric) of Richmond, VA, Daniel R. Holmes Jr. of King William, VA, Jerrell Golden (Keia) of Tappahannock, VA, Dustin Holmes (Priscilla) of Richmond, VA, Randolph Bundy (Britney) of King George, Annala Burno of Norfolk, VA, Antionette Manning (Darius) of Columbus, OH, and Evah Holmes of Richmond. There are 14 great grandchildren: Sylese Terry, Michael Terry III, Baby Eric Johnson (to be born in August), Daniel Holmes III, Ayden Holmes, Gavin Holmes, Arionna Golden, Jerrell Golden Jr., Jireh Golden, Ava Holmes, Randolph Bundy Jr.,Tyjaun Pendleton, Dariah Manning, and Aaliyah Manning; 5 nieces: Angela, Aretha, Ruth, Laverne and Ellen; 3 nephews: Harry Jr. Paul Jr. and Dorsey. A host of children who refer to momma as “grandma” because she was instrumental in their care and upbringing, and loyal friends.
