Essie Mae Coates Dixon, the daughter of the late Forest and Catherine Coates, departed this life suddenly on May 3, 2005.
Essie was born January 9, 1933 in Balty, Virginia. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at the St. John Baptist Church, Milford, Virginia. She received her early education in public schools. After graduating from Union High School, Bowling Green, Virginia, she relocated to the Washington, DC area. She worked many years at the historic Ben's Chili Bowl and later was employed at the U. S. Postal Service until she retired after 28 years of service. It was in the metropolitan area that she met and married the late Preston Dixon, from their union two lovely children were born, Karen and Jamie.
She gave diligently of her time and talents once uniting with the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church. She served faithfully on many auxiliaries: The Missionaries, Women's Ministry, Meals on Wheels and the Pastor's Aide Ministry. She was also very active with the National Capitol Baptist Convention USA.
Her memory will always be cherished through her devoted children, Karen and Jamie; two grandchildren that she adored, Jaylyn age 8 and Courney age 7; three sisters, Tina Brooks, LaVerne Baptist, Carol Bond; seven brothers; Walter (Bootsie), Leon, Floyd, Otis, Allandus (Al), Edward, Earl (Butch); five sister-in-laws, Cora, Mabel, Carol, Audrey, and Barbara; and one brother-in-law, Earl, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and frieds.
Essie was preceded in death by her sister Geneva Williams.
