Ella Carter Hill, daughter of the late Henry and Lettie Carter was born October 26, 1895 at Gaymont in Caroline County. She departed this glorious and blessed life of 109 years, on Friday, July 1, 2005 at 1:10 p.m. at Mary Washington Hospital. Ella was a sickly child, she contracted typhoid fever, because of this she didn't start school until later, she was mostly self-taught, with some help from her brother. One day she decided she needed some more learning, so she rounded up some kids in the community and walked daily five miles to school in Port Royal. If the weather was bad her father transported the children in his horse and buggy.
In 1915 she was joined in Holy Matrimony to Thomas Jefferson Hill.
Ella worked on the farm running the combine and doing all the jobs a man would do, her father had a hard time finding help.
She was very creative. Her walls are covered with her drawings. Quite a few of her sculptures, begun in early 1940, have been sold to many people. This hobby began when she notices the yellow clay at the bottom of a well at her old farm. She looked at the clay and thought to herself what could I do with that. As a result fanciful, contemporary people were created.
Ella has always loved children and animals and had a strong faith in the Lord. At an early age, she accepted the Lord as her personal savior and joined Shiloh Baptist Church, Port Royal. She was a lifetime member and was considered and loved as Church Mother and oldest member. She worked faithfully in her Church. She resided at Carriage Hill Nursing Home after many felt she needed special care and attention. She displayed a beautiful character and has truly been a guiding light in the lives of many.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her loving cousin and caregiver, Daisy Byrd of Port Royal; two devoted special cousins, Blanche Jefferson and Julia Stroman both of Fredericksburg; a host of great nieces and nephews, and a special extended family, The Cain Family.
