Elizabeth Virginia (Lucas) Peyton earned her heavenly wings on June 30, 2023, at her residence in King George, Virginia at the blessed age of 99. She was the ninth of thirteen children born to the late Henry and Nancy Lucas.
Elizabeth was baptized at an early age, and became a member of Good Hope Baptist Church in King George under the pastorate of the late Rev. Lloyd Watts. She was a member of the Goodwill Gospel Choir. She was presented a plaque on November 16, 2003 for “54 years of making a joyful noise unto the Lord.” She faithfully served in several positions in the Choir.
Elizabeth graduated from Edgehill Training School in King George. On June 7, 1943 she was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Alphonzo Peyton. Together they were blessed to raise a daughter Priscilla Louise.
Elizabeth was very active in the community through church and missionary activities including Flower and Beautification Ministry. She used her talents to enhance any given occasion including sewing and designing choir gowns, party planner, as well as being the architect of home improvement in her own right. Her favorite color was red. She loved beautiful curtains, and if she couldn’t get to the store to get new curtains, she’d make her own. Then with scraps of the material, she made beautiful quilts. She performed her occupation as domestic worker passionately, efficiently, and faithfully.
Elizabeth was innovative, and ahead of her time. She was pro education; able to teach her daughter to read and write before first grade when there was no kindergarten. She was an entrepreneur, and as a self-employed person, she took in laundry, and baked delicious pound cakes. She loved to sing and listen to gospel music. Elizabeth had a flair for fashion, and specially accented her outfits with a scarf. She was known as “The Scarf Lady.” During winter months, Elizabeth loved putting together puzzles of over 1000 pieces. She also loved Dominoes, enjoyed arguing with Judge Judy. She enjoyed giving the winning answer for game shows Family Feud and The Price is Right. She liked scratch-offs, and often won. Elizabeth had a keen sense of humor and an infectious laugh. She was graceful, humble, and a beautiful spirit. But do not mistake her meekness for weakness…she stood her ground!
Elizabeth was all about Family! She was a loving mother, grandmother and Auntie. In addition to her parents, Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband, Alphonzo Peyton, five brothers: Earl, Roy, Wilson, John, and Cecil Lucas; seven sisters: Hellon and Elvira Lucas, Azeal Whiting, Nancy Winfield, Claudia Smith, Maria Haskins, and Edna Lucas.
She leaves to celebrate fond memories of a life well-done: her daughter Priscilla Louise (Robert) Jones; two granddaughters: Cameshia Simone and Robyn Clara Jones; great granddaughter Shenise Kiaundra Jones; godson Ronnie Lucas; special friends: Dorothy Mitchell and Peggy Grant; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
