Earl Paige Richards was one of seven children born to the late Oliver and Ellie Vessels Richard on May 16, 1928 in King and Queen County.
Earl known as, ''Coach'', and ''E.P.'', entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, November 18, 2003 at Mary Washington Hospital. He was a devoted father, grandfather, uncle, great uncle and friend.
At an early age, he accepted Christ as his personal Savior and joined Jerusalem Baptist Church, where he served as a faithful Usher until his health failed him.
Earl had many accomplishments in his very active life, such as, he was offered a contract with the Pittsburg Pirates during his Junior year at North Carolina A & T. During his four years at North Carolina A & T, they won CIAA Baseball Crowns each of those years. He was inducted into North Carolina A & T Sports Hall of Fame in Greensboro, N. C., where his portrait joined approximately 75 others who are enschrined in the College's Student Union. He was an Educator for 33 years, which included Caroline County High School Sports, first at Bowling Green and then at Caroline High. These sports included baseball adn basketball. He was a member of the Welcome Masonic Lodge #125.
Some favorite past times included hunting, coaching, watching sports, regularly attending homecomings at his Alma Mater (North Carolina A & T) and enjoying family and friends. He was truly a sports enthusiast.
Coach leaves to cherish his memories, five children, Daryl Young, Cheryl (Cookie) Mallory (Wilber); Kim Newman (Stefanie); Stacy Custalow and ''Baby girl'' Claudette Sims; seven grandchildren, Alan, Trey, Noah, Cordell, Denike, Kellen, Alonzo and one great grandson, Hirk; two precious Aunts, Suzy Irene Jones and Laura Thomas; sister-in-law, Kathleen ''Kat'' Richards; one special niece, Vernell Hudgins; two special nephews, Jimmy Hunter and Tim Marshall and their spouses; a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
