Earl Lee Burruss was born on July 1, 1934 in Caroline County, Virginia to the late Ezekiel Lee and Ethel Mallory Burruss. Earl entered quietly into eternal rest on Saturday, June 27, 2015 at Riderwood Village (Arbor Ridge), in Silver Spring, Maryland.
He received his education in the public schools located in Caroline County, Virginia. He graduated from Union High School.
Earl gave his life to Christ at an early age and was a member of Second Baptist Church in Ruther Glen, VA. Although he moved from Ruther Glen to Washington, DC and later to Huntington, Maryland, he remained a member of Second Baptist Church until his death.
He was also associated with the Circle of Love and Friendship Ministry, an organization committed to serving the needs of the elderly and youths.
Earl married Olivia Brawner Burruss on October 23, 1965. He was the father of three children –Serena and Dante (twins), and Dyann.
While in school, Earl worked on the farm raising chickens, selling eggs, mowing and maintaining the lawn surrounding the house, and performing other farm chores. Shortly after graduating, he entered the U.S. Army. Once his tour of duty was completed, he moved from Virginia to Washington, DC where he held a variety of jobs including working at the airport and driving a cab. Later, he moved to Huntington, Maryland where he continued being a cab driver and became a school bus driver. In fact, Earl owned his own taxicab and provided much needed transportation to those in his community.
Earl enjoyed attending church, visiting with friends and family, traveling, taking photographs, and gardening. One of his prize possessions was his large photograph collection. Earl was fond of his garden and would often share the vegetables and fruits he grew. He was business-minded and during his lifetime owned and managed many successful businesses, including a leaf collection business, two record stores, an ice cream truck, a taxicab business, a night club that had an adjacent carry-out and gasoline station, and a photography business. He took pictures not only at special events but also had a booth at Marshall Hall where he made buttons with the pictures he took. He had no fear of trying something new.
Earl leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Olivia B. Burruss; one son – Dante M. Burruss of Sterling, VA.; four (4) grandchildren – Jasmine, Joshua, and Jalyn White of Pinetop, NC and Hilton Faulcon of Gainesville, VA.; one son-in-law Min.
