Dr. Timothy O. Smith, 53, passed into his eternal rest on Friday, July 17th. Timothy was born on September 5, 1955, in Stuttgart, Germany. He accepted Christ at a young age and was baptized at the age of nine. Early on, many thought he was destined for the ministry. He actively participated in Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, Bible studies, sang in church choirs, and over the course of his life delivered several sermons.
Timothy was a fervent reader and had a genuine love of learning. His academic achievements were noteworthy. Timothy graduated from King George High School, where he was a member of the National Honor Society, the International Thespian Society, the chess club and the debate team. He received national recognition for his performance on the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, and was one of 347 finalist, from a field of 50, 000, awarded the National Achievement Scholarship Program for Outstanding Negro Students, Timothy attended the University of Virginia, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. He earned his master's degree and his Ph.D. at the University of Missouri, Columbia.
Timothy spoke fluent German. Between his junior and senior year of high school, he participated in an Experiment in International Living, where he lived with family in Germany for six weeks. During his work as a government contractor, he worked on extended assignments in Germany and Japan.
As a Senior Research Analyst for the Missouri Department of Economic Development, he presented original research to the State Board of Education and the Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education for the State of Missouri. Has presented papers at national conferences sponsored by the U.S. Census Bureau, the University of Kentucky and the University of Notre Dame. His research has been recognized by the United States Census Bureau and the American Chamber of Commerce Research Association Council for Community and Economic Research. Timothy also served on the Campus Institutional Review Board for Research on Human Subjects.
Timothy was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha, Incorporated and a charter member of the Fredericksburg area graduate chapter. Timothy was a quiet, gentle soul who loved to talk, listen, sing, laugh, play chess, dominoes, scrabble and Trivial Pursuit. While playing Bible Trivial Pursuit, those around him marveled that he not only knew most of the answers, but he would also go on and explain the events of the world at that time.
Timothy was the son of the late Olie O. Smith. He is survived by his mother, Pearl Amy Smith, two sisters, Gretna Y. Smith of Virginia Beach, VA, and Amy R. Smith of Spotsylvania, VA, and his brother, Thomas J. Louden of Fredericksburg, VA., his uncle Rueben Amy, Sr., one uncle-in-law, two aunts-in-laws, a host of cousins, and many colleagues and friends.
