Douglas Byrd “Othey” Jeter, son of the late Theoliver “Jake” Jeter and Musiel Byrd Jeter Parker was born on October 13, 1936 in Caroline County, Virginia. He departed this life on July 9, 2017 surrounded by his family at Mary Washington Hospital.
To his family and friends he was known as “Squirrel”.
He attended Union High School and it was during this time he decided he wanted to work to help provide for his parents and siblings.
He then moved to Washington, D.C. and it was there he met and married the love of his life, Ida Alena Fortune on November 25, 1967. Through this union they had five children: Donna M. Jeter of King George, VA., Douglas A. Jeter of King George, VA., Diana L. Jeter of King George, VA., Debra A. Jeter-Thomas (Duane) of Baltimore, MD., and Dorothy R. Jeter of Fredericksburg, VA., and seven grandchildren who were the light of his life Paulina, Christina, Taylor, Kokayi, Kayin, Kojo and Olivia; and his little pet Chico Gonzalez.
He also leaves to cherish his brother Lewis (Eileen), of Clinton, MD., sister-in-law Rebecca E. Fortune of Washington, D.C.; two brothers-in-law Robert E. Fortune (Ruth) of Hustle, VA. and Thomas Fortune of Chance, VA., and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Othey remained a devoted husband, father and grandfather until the end. He provided and cared for all and checked on his family regularly. As his health declined Ida became his caregiver up until his death. They were best friends, soul mates and the love of each others lives as they honored their wedding vows “Til Death Do Us Part”
