Virgie Mae Coleman was born on November 24, 1938 to the late Chastine Johnson Sr. and Odeal Young Johnson. She accepted her call from heaven and transitioned peacefully on March 25, 2021 while taking a nap.
Virgie, affectionately known as “Nonnie” by her children attended Union High School in Bowling Green, Virginia, where she thoroughly enjoyed and found her love for cooking in Home Economics. She was a member of the 1957 graduating class.
Virgie met and married the love of her life, Isham Coleman Sr. on September 7, 1957 and remained happily united for 46 years until his death. To this union four children were born, Beverly, Charles, Denise and Isham Jr. The family would often enjoy family vacations to Virginia Beach, Williamsburg, and Washington, D.C..
Virgie worked for years as a caretaker for several families. Many have given her credit for raising their children. She took great pride in her work and enjoyed every minute.
Virgie accepted Christ at an early age at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Supply, Virginia. She later joined the Long Branch Baptist Church in Woodford, Virginia and served faithfully until her health failed. She loved the Lord and it was reflected in her Christian walk and service. She was a dedicated Deaconess, Missionary and Head of Hospitality for over 30 years. She organized and planned meals and decorations for special events to include Homecoming, Anniversaries, Revivals, Funerals and Special Celebrations. The aroma of the fried chicken and cabbage would penetrate the sanctuary during services.
Virgie loved her family and friends. She didn’t miss an opportunity to have everyone together for dinner, birthdays, graduations and holidays. Her famous Seven Layer Salad along with other family favorites to include Chili, Meatballs, Corn Pudding, Warm apple sauce, Pigs in the blanket, Chocalate cakes and many more were always on the menu and never disappointed. She always had everyone together on Christmas Eve with so many presents we could barely fit in the living room, but we did. These were priceless moments that we will cherish always. Virgie also had a “Ladies” group that was inseparable, Ms. Bell Moss (preceded her in death),Ms. Marie Boozer, Ms. B.L. Washington, Ms. Anita Wolfolk, Ms. Daisy Brown and Ms. Gloria Williams (preceded her in death). They enjoyed many outings, lunches and iggigglingyearly girl trips. Nonnie also enjoyed shopping, reading, poetry an in her words “sniggling and giggling”.
Virgie parents, siblings, husband and son (Charles) preceded her in death.
She leaves to cherish her memory, three children Beverly (Michael), Denise(Joe), Isham Jr. one daughter-in-law Belinda, seven grandchildren, Eric, Jamal, Iyisha, Trenton, Ashlyn, Charles II, Viviana, seven great grandchildren, Paliaya, Aliyah, Alannah, Amaya, Aniyah, Zilo, Jari, and one brother Chastine Johnson Jr., one sister Blanche Collins, caregiver Anita (Boo)Moore, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
