Deaconess Mabel Scott

November 10, 1931 — July 19, 2022

Deaconess Mabel Scott

On Tuesday, November 10, 1931, Mabel Beatrice Parr was born in King George, Virginia to the late Jesse and Irene Parr. Six weeks after her birth, her father transitioned and her aunt and uncle, Hobart and Mable Williams, took Mabel into their home to raise and nurture her until the age of 17. She grew up with her cousin, the late George Williams, whom she considered to be a brother. On Tuesday, July 19, 2022, Mabel quietly and peacefully transitioned to eternal rest at her home surrounded by her three children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Mabel was the second of seven children born to her mother. Her brother, Lawrence Odell Parr, and four sisters, Blanche Parr, Glorine Campbell, Thelma Holden, and Doris Woodall, preceded her in death. Her brother, Carroll Bush, visited her often and they spent many Sunday afternoons together.

At an early age, Mabel accepted the Lord as her personal Savior and joined Antioch Baptist Church in King George, Virginia. She was the pianist for the Senior Choir for many years and would often invite the members to her home for choir rehearsal. Mabel also served as a doorkeeper for numerous years where she proudly greeted and seated worshippers on Sunday mornings as well as special services. In 1976, she was set apart as a deaconess and fulfilled the responsibilities of the office for many years. She served on many committees supporting the values of the church. Mabel received many, many letters of appreciation, certificates, plaques, and gifts from the church she loved so much. She attended church regularly until her health began to fail; however, her church never forgot her. On April 8, 2018, her title was changed from Deaconess to Deaconess Emeritus based on her many years of service to her Lord and her church. Mabel received many cards and gifts from her church family throughout her illness which she always appreciated.

Mabel was educated in and graduated from the King George County Training School on June 2, 1948. She was employed as a domestic engineer for many years until her grandchildren began to arrive.

On February 13, 1949, she married her high school sweetheart, William Thomas “Boybaby” Scott. To this union four children were born: William Jesse, Darryl Lysander, Lawrence Gordon, and Janice Natalie. Her third son (Gordon) transitioned at the age of 3 and a granddaughter, Dominique, transitioned at birth. On September 12, 2011, her husband of 62 years transitioned at the age of 82.

Mabel loved her family. When family called or visited, her countenance would light up. She attended every family reunion and often traveled near and far for family gatherings. Mabel was a caregiver for her mother-in-law, mother and husband. Mabel loved doing all she could for her grandchildren. Whatever they asked for, they received, even daily rides to school.
Loving memories of Mabel will be cherished by her three children: Jesse Scott, Darryl Scott and Janice Williams (Ralph); Grandchildren: Marcia Williams, Wanda Gross, Machelle Williams, Angela Scott, Ernest Thompson, William Scott II, and Charlene Thompson; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother, Carroll Bush (Maranda); one sister-in-law, Liza Parr; godchildren Avis Clinton, Aaron Holden, and Daphne Walker; a host of nieces and nephews; two special friends Irma Jackson and Helen Buckner; and two special family friends, Marzette Pender and Rose Ferguson.
