Deaconess Clara Romain Peyton Smith went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 20, 2010 at the Mary Washington Hospital, Fredericksburg, Va. She fought the good fight, through illness and life processed, always trusting and abiding in God's everlasting love.
She was preceded in death by her husband Dea. Charles Smith, sisters Edna Tanner, Henrietta Grymes, Rosie Lucas and her brothers Benjamin, Alphanzo, Algernon and John Peyton, Sr.
She was born on November 20, 1920 to the late Arthur and Lillie Peyton in King George, Va. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized in the Potomac River at Potomac Beach. She was a member of the Good Hope Baptist Church where she joined as a young teenager. She later changed her membership to the First Baptist Church when she married Deacon Carl Smith. At First Baptist she was an active member of the Missionary Circle, Flower Club, Deaconess Board and Superintendent of the Sunday School for about 12 years. She loved family and was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, relative, mentor, and friend. She was not one for foolishness, but was always ready and willing to help others. To all she was a blessing, a joy and a gift from the Lord. Her love of God, church, and the Pastor were evident in the life she led and showed to others in her daily activities.
She was also a member of the Westmoreland Prince Hall Affiliation Order of the Eastern Star # 207.
She worked for the Mason family for over years and raised Katherine Berry Dunn and her brother, the late Judge George Mason III.
She leaves to cherish her memory, as son, Charles Smith of Fredericksburg, Va.; her sister Mary Jackson of Montclair, New Jersey, two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Peyton of King George, Va; Geneva Peyton of Colonial Beach, Va., two God-daughters Lillie Mae Tate and Linda Bradshaw and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
