Deacon Wilbur Montague departed this life, Thursday, December 18, 2008 at Mary Washington Hospital, Fredericksburg, Va.. Deacon Montague was home throughout his illness until his time of death. Deacon Montague was the son of the late Joseph and Anna Montague.
Deacon Montague was educated in the Caroline County Public Schools. After finishing school, Deacon Montague moved to Washington, D.C. to seek employment. He was employed with the Federal Communications Commission until his retirement
Deacon Montague joined Third Mount Zion Baptist church at the age of 11 under the pastoral leadership of the late Rev. M.L. Johnson. As a youngster, Deacon Montague assisted the pastor with baptism. He was later ordained as a deacon in 1972. He was a faithful member until he was unable to attend or participate in church activities.
Deacon Montague and his wife met in Washington, D.C. through mutual friends. They married and remained a monument of love and commitment to each other. In 1992, the couple moved back Deacon Montague's native town of Caroline County. Although the Montague's had no children of their own, they have served as a mother and father to many. The couple believes "you should always treat people the way in which you would like to be treated."
Deacon Montague leaves to cherish his memories, two sisters-in-law, Constance and Ossie Johnson, both of Maryland; a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, cousins, a special cousin, Maggie Margaret James of Woodford, Va; four godchildren, Gladys Deloatch, Thomasina Williams, Theresa James and Kenneth W. James, Jr.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
