Major Wilton Holmes was born on June 3, 1931 in Port Conway, Virginia to the late John and Elizabeth Holmes. Major departed this life peacefully on
Saturday, March 25, 2017 surrounded by his loving family.
Major attended public school in King George Virginia. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior at an early age and joined Salem Baptist Church. Major served on the Deacon Board at Salem for over 50 years and was Chairman of the Deacon Board for over 25 years. He also served as church sexton for many years.
Major served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He worked at the Naval Surface Weapons Center for 41 years. He retired in 1991 to enjoy his true love in life working and maintaining his vegetable garden. For many years, family, friends and neighbors have enjoyed the fruits of Major's labor from his garden.
He was a member of the King George Masonic Lodge #314.
He was married to Juanita A. Holmes for 61 years and from this beautiful bond, God blessed them with four daughters and two sons.
Major was a devoted husband, loving father, caring grandfather and is preceded in death by six siblings: Richard Holmes, Alfred Holmes, Elizabeth Robinson, John Holmes, Margaret Robinson, and George Holmes.
As the patriarch of his family, Major exemplified genuine godly love by example. Although a very humble spirit, Major was quick-witted and loved to laugh. He had a contagious smile and left a lasting impression on anyone who met him. Major had a great passion for the Lord, devoting much of his time reading and studying the Word. Major loved his church and would go to the church daily and sometimes even twice a day.
Major leaves to cherish his fond memory his wife, Juanita A. Holmes; six children, Harnetta Smith (Percell), Gwendolyn Chandler, Virgil Holmes (Melissa), Vincent Holmes, Alicia Peyton (Herman), and Vadine Smith (Neil) all of King George, VA; two brothers, Robert Holmes, Sr., and Frank Holmes (Mildred), all of King George, VA.
