Deacon George Edward Smith was born to the late Alfred and Carrie Smith on March 2, 1920 in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He departed this life on March 26, 2008 at 2:30pm at Mary Washington Hospital.
Deacon Smith was joined in marriage to the former Lindora Beverly in 1943 and they were blessed with nine children of which two are deceased; George and Delores Smith.
He began his education in Little Ark School and later received his High School Diploma.
He became a member of Little Ark Baptist Church at an early age under the leadership of Rev. George Carter. Under the leadership of Pastor, Dr. John Chapman, he was ordained as Deacon and served 30 years and was faithful to his Church and to the Diaconate Ministry. He served as Chaplain of the King George NAACP as well as to the Missionary Society of Little Ark Baptist Church. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 329.
He served in World War II and retired from the Navy Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, Virginia after 31 years. After retiring, he started working in gardening and produced some of the best vegetables around. Sometimes, he sold his vegetables and other times he simply gave them away.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Lindora Smith of 65 years; Seven children, Vernis Beverly (Juanita), Alfred Smith, June Smith, Floyd Smith, Corlette Bumbrey, Rita Smith and Ledrow Smith(Shirley); Brother-in-law, James Beverly(Esther); two Sisters-in-law, Sylvia Beverly(Thomas Larry) and Nannette Smith; seventeen grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. He had five special girls, Patricia Hooker, Marlena Hooker, Alicia Cole, Marsha Williams and Michelle Williams.
His favorite saying is, ''Let her have her way, don't bother her.''
