Deacon Elect Ulysses Edwards

Ulysses Edwards, affectionately known as "Goat" was born on January 21, 1943 to the late John Wesley and Lizzie Mae Edwards in Albany, Georgia. During the evening hours of December 23, 2009, at Sentara Heart Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, heaven prepared for his arrival. As family members stood by his side, prayers were offered up to God and as praise and worship permeated the atmosphere, he made his transition to glory.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John Wesley and Lizzie Mae Edwards; three brothers, Leroy, Willie, and Charles, and one sister, Sarah.

Ulysses attended the Suffolk County Public School System in New York and graduated from Greenport High School. While attending school he loved sports; excelling in basketball and baseball. After graduation he worked for Mullen Motors and then began his career in the construction field. He also became a "fashion designer" by his own right.

Ulysses later moved to Fredericksburg, Virginia and worked for CMC Concrete Construction, Inc. for over 25 years. He always took pride in his work and became a master in his field. Senior Management defined his position, as well as Ulysses, as unique. He held the position of Senior Concrete Mason and in his later years was promoted to Senior Quality Control Manager.

Ulysses loved his family tremendously. He had a way of making each individual feel not only loved, but special. He challenged his family to be the best they could be by reminding them to tap into the "Edwards" way of doing things. "If you fall – and you will – get up, dust yourself off and try it again with your head up high." He loved nature and the sea shore and was an avid story teller.

Ulysses received Christ and joined First Baptist Church – Amber in King George, Virginia in November 2007; where he served on the Deacon Board as well as the Board of Trustees.

He leaves to cherish his memories three sons, James Edwards, Vaughn Edwards and Ulysses Edwards, Jr.; three daughters, Yolanda Jenkins, Fifi Williams, Alicia Evans-White, and a very special niece, Rosalyn McKine. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Edwards. He leaves behind four sisters, Frankie Forrest, Victoria Smith, Johnnie Mae Saunders and Margaret Lyburd; two sons-in-law, Greg Jenkins and Arnold White; one daughter-in law, Crystal Edwards, 27 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, and his extended family, Celia McKinney, Sean Evans, Kim Washington, Rudy McKinney, Anthony McKinney, Michael McKinney and Sheila Kenny.
