Charlotte Frances Horsey

Charlotte Frances Horsey was born July 4, 1917 to the late Wesley and Clara Conway. She grew up in Clara, Maryland and graduated from Nanticoke High School. Since public transporation did not exist, she and her four sisters had to walk 5 miles to school everyday.
In 1945 "Frances" married Eddie Jernigan, from Ahoskie, North Carolina. To this union were born 3 children; Flossie Geraldine (1953), Jerome Eddie (1954), and Paula Jeanette in 1956. Eddie died unexpectedly of a heart attack in May 1958 at age 50; Frances was left to raise her 3 children alone. She worked odd jobs, including field labor and house cleaning to support her family; sadly in August 1963, at the tender age of 10, daughter Flossie died after a brief illness. Frances did her best to go on.
In 1968, she married Wesley Horsey. During this time she secured a job as a meat packer at Champion Chicken in Nanticoke, MD. Wesley passed away in 1974, and Frances continued to work.
In 1999, at the age of 45, Jerome suffered a heart attack and passed away in his sleep. After his death, Frances moved to Fredericksburg, VA with her daughter Paula. During the next seven years, Frances joined the Spotsylvania Senior Citizens Club and was a "driving force" in all activities. She also joined Peoples Union Baptist Church in King George, VA under the leadership of her son-in-law, Pastor Harry Wallace. She was known as "Ma Frances, the firecracker." Prior to this she was a lifetime member of Grace United Methodist Church in Newtown, MD. She served as Usher, Communion Steward, Kitchen Committee member and President of the Blooming Rosebud Community Club. She was an active member of the Westside Senior Citizens Club in Bivalve, MD, where she made quilts and played bingo and participated in other events.
In 2006, due to declining health and Alzheimers, it became necessarily to admit her to Golden Living Center of Fredericksurg. She was active in crafts and bingo. She loved it when the Peoples Union Men's Choir came there on 4th Sundays to sing.
On April 26th at 8:30am, Frances went from earth to glory. She leaves to mourn, her daughter Evangelist Paula Wallace (Pastor Harry) of Richmond, VA., 3 grand-daugthers: Mrs. Stacee Ogburn (Gerald) and Mrs. Norita Gayles (Antonio) of Richmond, and Mrs. Leslie Cole (Darnell) of Fredericksburg, VA., 8 Great Grandchildren: Darnell Cole, Jr. (DJ), DeShon Cole, DeAsia Ogburn, Sharese Ogburn, Alexius Cole, Kaden and Justin Gayles and Arielle Ogburn; 2 Sisters: Mrs. Edythe Reed of Salisbury, MD, and Mrs. Mattie Milbourne of Philadelphia, PA and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends; also preceding her in death were sisters: Susan Wardell and Gertrude Long.
