Charles "Bo" Byrd

On Sunday, November 30, 2014, God extended his almighty hand of love and gently took Charles Byrd to a home of joy, peace, and happiness. Bo, as he was affectionately called by his family and friends, was born on July 23, 1925 to the late Frank and Otha Byrd in Essex County, VA. He was educated in the public school system of Essex County. Bo confessed his faith in God at an early age and was baptized and became a member of the Little Zion Baptist Church in Oak Grove, VA, where he faithfully served on the Senior Usher and Culinary Ministries. He worked various jobs, including Ingleside Plantation, Hilton Enterprise, Naval Ordnance Station, and Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, VA, from where he retired.

Bo was a member of the Round Hill Hunt Club, as he was an avid hunter and fisherman. One of his proudest accomplishments was winning the state record for a six-point buck. He enjoyed relaxing in his recliner, from where he watched his favorite western TV shows and caught the sights from the bay window. He also looked forward to listening t o WRAR's Sunday morning inspirations before he went to church. Bo had a joval disposition and was cherished by his family and friends. He also had a great love for man's best friend- his dog Shelby, aka Suk. Some of his favorite quotes were"that's what the man said","let the guests eat first", and "feed it to the cats".

Bo was united in holy matrimony to Alberta Richards on January 21, 1949. From this union, seven children were born. Two sons preceded him in death; Rodney(Puncho) and Charles A.(Charlie Boy) Byrd. He is survived by his devoted wife Alberta; three daughters, Phyllis Jett (Maurice), Betsy Lofton, and Renee Johnson(Linwood Sr.), all of Colonial Beach, VA; two sons, Bobby Byrd, Sr.(Shelva) and Gregory Byrd, Sr. (Jonelle), both of Colonial Beach, VA; two daughters-in-law, Juanita Byrd and Bertha Byrd;two brothers, Thomas Byrd(Rosa Marie) and Milton Byrd, and a sister-in-law, Rose Ella Byrd, all of Colonial Beach, VA;one sister, Beatrice Berry(William) of Fort Washington, MD; 24 grandchildren, 66 great-grandchildren, nine great-great- grandchildren;three special men that he loved as his sons, Lloyd Brown of Richmond, VA, Keith Johnson of Waldorf, MD, Corey "Fat Rat" Jackson of Colonial Beach, VA; and a host of other close family and friends too numerous to name. All that came to know him recognized him as "Uncle Bo".
