On Friday June 26th, 2020 Trustee Carolyn Elaine Bundy Johnson, the oldest child, of Priscilla Jones Bundy and Clinton Bundy, having made peace with God, entered into eternal rest at the age of 90 at Tappahannock Regional Hospital. She was born on September 23, 1929 in Supply, Virginia. In her youth, she joined the Ebenezer Baptist Church and her relationship with Christ began. Carolyn had labored tirelessly in His vineyard and had given unselfishly of her time, talent, and treasure in order that His name would be glorified. She was a sibling of three sisters Ethel, Rae and Ercell, all of whom preceded her in death. She was joined in Holy Matrimony to the late Lewis Johnson.
Trustee Johnson’s first teacher was her Great Grand Mother, Deaconess Nellie Hailstock Johnson. After graduating from high school, Trustee Johnson entered Virginia Union University where she excelled academically and earned a Bachelor Degree in Mathematics. During her undergraduate years she pledged Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. Upon graduation she was offered an accounting position at PA Department of Revenue as an Auditor. But her heart led her back to Caroline County, VA. Thus, choosing to take a position teaching Mathematics at her Alma Motto. In 1945, Carolyn began her teaching career at Union High School. Her additional educational background was done at New York City University, where she earned a Master’s Degree in Mathematics. She was known as a strict disciplinarian and yet she was loved and respected by all of her students. After 35 years, of instilling the value of education in her students, Carolyn retired from teaching but her work was just beginning.
Following the Christian devotion and guidance of her Great Grand Mother, Grand Mother Deaconess Ethel Johnson Jones and her Mother Deaconess Priscilla Bundy, Trustee Johnson accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior and was baptized at an early age at Ebenezer Baptist Church until her death. During her Christian service to the church, she served as a trustee, sang in the choir, was an usher and participated in many other religious activities.
Through the years, Trustee Johnson expressed great concern for community needs and devoted herself to such organizations as the AARP as a Tax Preparer; Retired Teachers Association; Mattaponi Baptist Association; Thursday Prayer Group and Financial Secretary for a number of years.
A link in our family chain has been removed, but we are comforted by her memories, sacrifices and desire to go home to meet God. Her inspiration will forever be etched in the minds and hearts of her Nephew Howard Jarvis; Niece Dayle Brown; Nephew Kenneth Brown; Niece Sheila Allen; Great Nephews Lamont Turner; Lawrence Jarvis; Derrick Holmes and Kobe Brown; Great Niece Ayana Moss; and many devoted cousins: Ethel Johnson; Helen Brown; Audrey Jones and Gwendolyn Foster; Special Friend Deaconess Geneva Thompson; Numerous God Children, friend and riding partners Deaconess M. Gaines and Virginia Johnson, Ruth "Nat" Johnson, Laverne Johnson other relatives and friends.
Although Carolyn has received numerous recognitions and awards of appreciation, she has now been blessed with the ultimate reward which is to sit in her Father’s House for a job well done. Aunt Carolyn, we love you and we miss you, but God loves you even more.
