Betty Jean Royal was born on August 26, 1956 to the late Mary C. Pinchback and Moses Wiles in Pittsylvania County, Va. She attended primary school in Danville, Va. The family relocated to Washington, D.C. in 1970 where she attended D.C. public schools.
She would later go to a city funded secretarial school. From there she was able to gain employment with the Civil Service Commission, now known as OPM. She left the federal government in the mid-80s and sought employment at Gallaudet University where she worked in various departments across campus until retirement in 2007.
Betty had a strong Christian faith and relationship with Christ. She was a member of First Baptist Church Ambar. She had a very genuine, kind spirit and was very generous and benevolent. She loved arts and crafts, cooking a good meal, shopping and going to new places with her daughter. She also really enjoyed studying the Holy Bible and quality time spent with family and friends. Family always meant a lot to her.
Betty is survived by one daughter, Kwana Royal; two aunts, Mamie Fitts and Lavinia Coleman; one niece, Darnell Edmond; one great-niece, Kyra Edmond; one great-nephew, Melroy Edmond and a host of cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents Mary Christine Pinchback and Moses Wiles; her sister, Shirley Ann Neal; her brothers, Charles Wiles and Roy Lee Akers; and her nephew, Timothy Akers.
