Bertha Holmes

Mrs. Bertha B. Holmes, daughter of the late Sophia Davis and Nathaniel Johnson, was born July 31, 1933 in Rappahannock, Va. She departed this life on Saturday May 24, 2014. She was a loving and devoted mother, sister and grandmother.

Bertha attended school in the King George area. Bertha soon found herself in love and married Daniel Holmes. She later decided that she enjoyed Washington, DC and remained there until October of 2003. During her time in Washington, DC, she help raise several children and grandchildren. She was loved and well known in the Hartford Street Community. She resided with her daughter and grandchildren in Atlanta Georgia, until she could no longer fight the good fight. Bertha was placed on Dialysis in June of 2005. Bertha had the brightest smile.

Bertha health failed her in the preceding weeks and she came to reside at Manor Care in Decatur, Georgia. Bertha has gone on to be with her daughter Brenda King, sister Tunie Johnson and great-grandson Messiah Smith. Bertha is survived by six children: Sophia Alleyne (Roy Alleyne) of Alexandria Va., Mary White (Roland White) of King George Va., Charles Holmes (Dorothy Holmes) of Fredericksburg Va., James Brown Sr. (Renee Brown) of King George Va., Linda King (Frank Burden) of Atlanta Ga., and Paulette Holmes of Waldorf Md. She has 25 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. One surviving sister Ethel Tidwell of King George Va. And a host of nieces, nephews and other family members and friends.
