Retired Army Sgt. Maj. Bernard Clifton “Bert” Lucas was born to the late Charles Edward Lucas and Martha Madgelene Brown Lucas on November 9, 1946 in Colonial Beach Virginia. He slipped peacefully into eternity to be with the Lord on January 7, 2021 at his home in Dahlgren, Virginia.
At an early age, he accepted Christ and joined the Good Hope Baptist Church in King George, Virginia under the leadership of the late Reverend Ralph E. Cabbell. As a youth, he attended Sunday School and worship services. He attended Good Hope faithfully upon his return to King George in 2005 until his death.
Bernard was educated in King George County, graduating from Ralph Bunche High School in 1965. He was a proud member of the “Jive Five,” that included Raymond, Eugene, Tyrone, and Butch, then later Willie and Charles. Bernard’s proudest accomplishment was his 26 years of military service in the United States Army. One of his favorite quotes
was, “Once a soldier, always a soldier.” Everyone who knew Bernard heard the stories about his military experience. After his retirement in 1993, of course he could not be still sitting at home every day! For 8 years (1997-2005) he was a bus driver for the Piedmont Wagon Bus System in Hickory, North Carolina. When he moved back to King George in 2005, he continued as a bus driver with the King George County School System, resuming
the position that he had as a student at Ralph Bunche High School. He safely transported students for over 5 years before retiring in 2011.
Bernard was preceded in death by his parents and brothers--Vernell Stanley Lucas, Charles Linwood “Sonny” Lucas, and Theodore “Bobo” Lucas. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Nadine; daughter Crystal and son Bernard, Jr. “Bernie”; stepdaughters Patricia Parham (Larry) and Marlena Moore (Ryan); one grandson Daimon Moore; a loving sister Virginia Ashton; one devoted brother Robert Brown; 6 nephews, Robert S. Ashton, Jr., Wayne Ashton, Michael Ashton, Charles Tate (Shamieka), Mark Brown (Karen), and Jeffery Brown (Genni); 6 nieces, Jennifer Bennett (Ernest), Katrina Brown, Tonya Tyler (Anthony), Nikki Lucas, Toni Lucas, and Toleda Johnson; and a host of great-nephews and great-nieces.
