Arthur Lewis Tyler, III was born on January 25, 1954 to the late Arthur Lewis Tyler, Jr. and Mary Lucille Jordan Tyler; the youngest son of eight children. On Saturday, March 29, 2025, while at Belmont Bay Rehab and Healthcare Center in Woodbridge, Virginia, Arthur slipped peacefully into eternal rest.
Due to his disability, Arthur only attended public school for a short period of time. However, he was enrolled at the Rappahannock Activity Community Board where he had the ability to ride the van to and from school, attend field trips and socialize with people of like backgrounds. He also received life skills training from Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Ball as well as other family members to ensure he was able to care for himself.
He had a myriad of past-times that gave him joy. No one loved the outdoors like him. When he was younger, you could often find him outside running, visiting friends and family members on B-Gate road. Also, you could see him running alongside the King George County School buses as it picked up and dropped off children. If he wasn’t outside, you could surely find him at a number of places; Mr. and Mrs. Ball’s house and multiple family members houses “down the road”, Grants Hill Baptist Church (Montross, VA), Little Ark Baptist Church (Dahlgren, VA), inside watching his favorite television shows, The Flintstones, I LOVE Lucy, Leave It to Beaver, the Three Stooges or his all-time favorite, the Andy Griffith Show. And, let’s not forget, his love of music; gospel and Mr. Al “Love and Happiness” Green.
Family was of the utmost importance to him. As the Tyler family grew over the years, he never forgot any of the names of his siblings and nieces and nephews. Often asking, “How is Wayne, Alice, Chelle?”. Enjoying spending time watching Charlie and his other nieces and nephews. He loved when the entire family was together. He was almost overwhelmed with joy. Making sure that he hugged and spoke to each and every person in the room. Whether you were a stranger or not, you were greeted with a hug, smile, thumbs up and you received the same as you exited.
But there was no greater love than that for his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. In church, his outward love and adoration was apparent; raising his hand, rocking to the music, shouting “Amen”. He let his voice boom in praise. He was famous for saying, “The Lord woke me up this morning” with a smile on his face and thumb in the air.
During a visit in March, 2025 at the Rehab and Healthcare Center, Arthur made quite the profession to his sister, Thelma. “Pudding, I’m going home.” She replied, “Arthur, you can’t. You gotta stay here so they can get you better.” He said with utter confidence and a smile while looking and pointing up, “I’m going home”.
Arthur is preceded in death by his father, Arthur L. Tyler, Jr., mother, Mary L. Tyler, grandparents, Sammie and Edna M. Jordan, grandparents, Arthur and Nannie Tyler, Sr., sister, Laverne Tyler, sister/brother-in-law, Bernard and Carla Harris, and brother-in-law, John W. Hargray, Sr.
He leaves to cherish his memory, five siblings; sister, Thelma Hargray (King George, VA); brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Bertina Tyler (Mitchellville, MD); sister, Marilyn Williams (Stafford, VA); brother-in-law, Johnny Williams (Dahlgren, VA); brother, Morris Tyler (Fredericksburg, VA); sister, Pamela Crawford (Forestville, MD) and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews spanning the DMV area and beyond. In addition, Arthur had two special friends; Beverly Offer, who was a friend and neighbor to Morris and Arthur when they both resided in Fredericksburg, V. Deacon Charles Pratt, who Arthur consistently referred to as “Buddy”. Lastly, a special cousin, Lynne Johnson who regularly visited Morris and Arthur.
