Ann Mills Filmore was born February 24, 1921, in Caroline County, Virginia. Her immediate family unit included her mother, Callie Lee Roy, and brother, Elijah Franklin Lee, both preceded her in death. Realizing that there were greater livelihood opportunities for her in the north, she moved from Virginia to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Although residing in Philadelphia, Aunt Ann remained connected with her childhood community through continued attendance and financial support of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, especially during Homecoming and revival services each year. She enjoyed returning to Virginia with her mother to share in the experiences of reuniting with friends and fellowshipping with the Mt. Tabor church family. On November 25, 2011, she quietly and peacefully entered into eternal rest.
While living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, Aunt Ann was actively involved in the life of church ministry by sharing with others her gift and love of poetry and writing lyrics for a male gospel singing group. Exciting moments in her life included joining in holy matrimony to Joseph Nathaniel Mills, induction into the International Society of Poets in 1995, and the recognition bestowed upon her by St. Paul's Baptist Church in Glassboro, New Jersey, as one of the mothers of the church.
Aunt Ann's relationship with St. Paul's Baptist Church resulted from her meeting and marrying Iseman Filmore, which took them to a place of beautiful country scenery, Glassboro, New Jersey. Aunt Ann was preceded in death by Mr. Filmore. She possessed fond memories of forty years of Christian service at the St. Paul's Baptist Church as a member of various ministries which included Sunday School, Prayer Service, The Mothers Ministry Choir, Missionaries, Willing Workers, Pastor's Aide, and the Pillars of Fire Women's Ministry.
Longing to return to her childhood community, Aunt Ann relocated to Caroline, County Virginia where she reunited with family and the Mt. Tabor Baptist Church. Upon her return, Aunt Ann quickly became involved in the life of the church and community. She was a woman of many gifts and talents; among them were ingenuity, style, cooking, business principles and playing dominos with a determination to win.
Ann Mills Filmore is survived by her nieces Louise Forbes, Washington DC; Dorothy Peay (Gonzalas), Philadelphia PA; Margaret Brown (John), Milford Virginia; VA; Ruby V. Samuel, Milford, VA; Sally Waller, Bowling Green, VA; nephew Philip Lee, Bowling Green, VA; many great nieces and great nephews; relatives; play daughters Cynthia McNeil & Vicky Dansbury, and life-long friends.
