Anita Julia Byrd, daughter of the late Robert and Martha Fortune, was born on March 27, 1927 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. On November 19, 2014 she finished her earthly duties and peacefully slipped into eternal rest joining the Lord at his residence.
Anita received her education from the public school system of Westmoreland County, Virginia. She attended Grants Hill Baptist Church, where she accepted Christ as her personal savior at an early age. Anita was an exemplary homemaker and was also employed by both the Ingleside Plantation Nursery and the Perry Canning Factory.
Anita was a devoted and compassionate woman. She was united in Holy Matrimony to the love of her life, the late John Henry Byrd on May 15, 1948. From this union, six daughters and four sons were born. Two daughters and two sons preceded her to glory.
Anita was a "DIVA." She was charismatic and sophisticated. Her favorite color was Red. She loved her some red lipstick and red nail polish. You couldn't tell Anita anything, because she had "Errrything." She would always say, "I'll tell you 1 thing, I'll tell you 2 things, I'll tell you 3 things, but I'm only going to tell you one thing." And the one thing she would tell you would set you straight. She enjoyed the company of her family and friends. She loved everyone unconditionally. Anita was famous for her homemade bread and biscuits. She would always serve them with butter and black molasses. She had three great nephews who would always come by looking for the homemade bread.
She is survived by four daughters: Rose Byrd and Dorothy Mae Johnson (Edward) of Colonial Beach, VA, Delores Johnson (James) of Fort Washington, MD, and Evelyn LaPrade (Kenny) of Oxon Hill, MD; two sons: Daniel Byrd of Colonial Beach, VA and James Byrd (Lovenia) of Alexandria, VA; one daughter-in-law: Odessa Byrd of Hustle, VA; one sister-in-law: Beatrice Berry (William) of Fort Washington, MD; three brother-in-laws: Charles Byrd (Alberta), Thomas Byrd ( Rosa Marie), Milton Byrd all of Colonial Beach, VA; eighteen grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, loved ones and friends. Two very special friends: James Cox and Candace Butler.
