Alice S. Self

We meet in gratitude and in sorrow to reflect on the life of Alice Sylvetta Richards Self. Alice was the youngest daughter of the late James Wesley Richards and Mamie Elizabeth Streets Richards. Alice was born October 26, 1925, in Robbs Hill, Westmoreland County, Virginia.

On December 12, 2010, at Mary Washington Hospital, Fredericksburg, Virginia, Alice finished her earthly duties and quietly passed into eternal rest with the Lord. Alice was admitted to the hospital from Heritage Hall, King George, Virginia, where she entered April 1, 2008, after the death of her beloved husband, Milton D. Self.

Alice graduated from A.T. Johnson High School, Templemans, Virginia, in June of 1944. She accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age and united with Little Zion Baptist Church and willingly worked wherever she was needed until she was no longer able to attend. On October 31, 1999, the late Rev. William B. Scott, presented her an award for 31 years of dedicated and outstanding service as Treasurer of Little Zion Baptist Church Building Fund. Alice continued with her tithes and offerings even after she could no longer attend. She was always dutiful in preparing and serving large quantities of food for rally days and other church activities.
On March 19, 1949, Alice was joined in holy matrimony to her late husband, Milton D. Self. He predeceased her on March 18, 2008. There were no children from this union.

During her lifetime, Alice worked in several domestic jobs. For many years, she traveled to and from La Plata, Maryland, where she worked for family there. They thought highly of Alice and remembered her each year with a gift after she could no longer work for them.
The best use of life is Love. As the youngest sibling in her family, Alice showed us a new meaning for unselfish love with her unwavering love, warmth, kindness, and devotion to her family. She was the cornerstone of her family with her whole heart. She always put the welfare of them before her own.
Alice leaves to cherish her memory, her caring and devoted niece, Gladys M. Richards of Fredericksburg, Virginia; her devoted nephew Wilbert R. Self (Geraldine Self) of Cherry Hill, New Jersey, her sister-in-law, Eva Self of Alexandria, Virginia, a number of great nieces and great nephews, other relatives and friends
